How to Stain a Kitchen Counter
- 1). Lightly sand the counter top with 220-grit sand paper, ensuring that all surfaces are consistently abraded. An electric sander can also be used. Wear a face mask when sanding formica.
- 2). Remove or mask fixtures with masking tape. Mask the wall where it meets the edge of the counter and the top of the back splash.
- 3). Wipe down the surface with acetone and a sponge or rag.
- 4). Spray on an even coat of primer. Use the primer recommended by the stain manufacturer. Allow the primer to dry for at least 45 minutes, or until it is no longer sticky.
- 5). Sponge on your lightest base color uniformly to the counter so that the entire primer is covered. Allow this first coat to dry for at least 15 minutes.
- 6). Sponge on a second, discontinuous coat with a subsequent tone. Use dabbing motions to create texture. Allow the second layer to dry.
- 7). Continue adding tones until you have achieved the desired texture.
- 8). Spray on two to three coats of topcoat sealer and finish to create a protective sheen. Allow the topcoat to cure for three days before using the counter.
