Barcelona Vs Real Madrid: Who Will Win The Champions League?
Will Barcelona Win Big? 24% Of Survey Respondents Think So!
A survey recently conducted by Valued Opinions asked participants to choose which team currently competing in the Champions League will be crowned kings of Europe and take home the trophy. 24% of participants said they thought FC Barcelona is the side to beat this year.
Why are the survey respondents so confident in FC Barcelonas abilities? They could possibly be the best team in the world at the moment. For the past few years, critical opinion has definitely been wildly in favour of the Spaniards. Alex Ferguson, who knows a little something about top class football, deemed Barcelona the best team ever to line up against my Manchester United sides.
Historically, Barcelonas Champions League record is pretty solid. Beginning with 1992s victory, where the Dream Team, under the watchful eye of football legend Johan Cruyff, defeated Italians Sampdoria to win their first European Cup, Barcelona has been crowned European Champions five times.
The last time they won was back in 2011 after defeating Manchester United 3-1 at the home of English football, Wembley Stadium. This spectacular Champions League performance has lead to numerous accolades from the sporting press. The Guardians Sid Lowe called Barcelona the finest there has ever been, sentiments mirrored by Chelseas manager Jos Mourinho.
Its so far so good for Barcelona in terms of its 2014-15 Champions League campaign. A notable win came in Manchester where the Spaniards defeated Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Can they keep it up and reach the finals? Their old La Liga rivals could be waiting for them if they do...
The Looming Presence Of Real Madrid
While Barcelona claimed the top spot on the online survey as the side most likely to win the 2014/15 Champions League, 17% of respondents begged to differ. They believed that another Spanish side will emerge victorious; one that rivals Barcelona at home and internationally in almost all aspects: Real Madrid.
The rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid is fierce and has been for decades. Known as El Clasico, the clash between these two titans has dominated Spanish football for decades. Will it spill over into the Champions League?
Real Madrid also has had the same plaudits lauded on them as Barcelona. Goals Peter Staunton has said: Theres not a team in Europe that can match Real Madrid. Its a similar proposition to Barcelona. Both have an array of home grown and international talent; while Barcelona may have Lionel Messi, considered one of the best ever players of the game, Real Madrid are packing Welsh wonder Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Historically, Madrid has performed fantastically at European club competition level. Theyve won the Champions League a record 10 times and have held the trophy for the longest run in the contests history five times in a row from 1955-56 to 1959-60. Theyre also the current Champions League champions too which puts them in a great position to retain their title.
So far during their Champions League season, Madrid hasnt lost a game. Theyve also only conceded two goals. This amazing performance easily makes them the closest rivals to Barcelona in the Champions League.
