Making An Income From The Internet As An Affiliate

To become an affiliate all you have to do is register for an affiliate program or use larger affiliate networks such as Clickbank, PayDotCom or Click2Sell to get your personal tracking links for individual products that you decide you want to promote.

During the process of promoting these products you send customers to the vendor's site using these links, and their presence is monitored. If they complete a sale, you earn a commission. Different vendors have different rates, which can be up to and sometimes over 75%.

However when you're looking for products to promote don't just focus on how much you could make, look for quality products that your visitors can actually benefit from. Something you yourself might buy or use.  Otherwise refunds will eat away at your profits and you could earn a reputation for promoting low quality items.

As mentioned above you need to be registered with affiliate networks which are large sites that bring together vendors and affiliates. They provide useful statistics on how well offers are doing and streamline the whole process of promoting products online as both affiliates and vendors are vetted. The other benefit to some of the large networks is that they take care of the payment and refund processing so that the process is pretty well hands-off.

ClickBank.com is usually the first place that most affiliates get their start. It's easy to use and has a lot of products to choose from. The downside is that they deal mainly in ebooks, digital products and subscriptions, but that is slowly changing to more physical products. In principle you should always try out a product before you choose to promote it, or at least visit the vendor's site to see what you are actually expected to promote.  You would be amazed at how many affiliates don't do this and usually end up promoting a poor product.

You could also buy the product and return it or simply contact the owner and request a promotional copy which in most cases they're more than happy to do.

When you're searching the ClickBank marketplace for products to promote, you will see a list of statistics to the right side and below each item.

A quick way to determine if something is a worthwhile product is to look at the Gravity. If the product has a high Gravity number it means that a lot of affiliates are promoting that product. The logic is that if this product wasn't any good and wasn't making any money for these

people, then why would so many of them promote it?  Again, you should still take a look at the product itself before promoting anything.

When you click to promote, you will be taken to a small screen where you should see your unique account name or nick-name already entered for you. Just click on ‘Create' to get your unique URL.

The URL that's generated for you will be your tracking link which you should use to promote that product.

If you have decided that you want to promote a specific product and can't find what you are looking for at any of the affiliate networks you know about, simply do a Google search for the type of product you're looking for and the words "affiliate program" – you should get a quite a long list of results to go through.

Below is a list of popular affiliate networks to consider:

If you are going to promote a product on your own website it's important to make sure that everything on your site is in order when you're signing up for these networks. These companies like to protect their networks' integrity as best they can, so someone will manually review your website before they accept you into their affiliate network. Make sure you don't have broken or unfinished pages and that your site is ready to be used for promotions.

There are many types of offers available on the affiliate networks, and it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the main terms used for affiliate payouts.  These are CPS and CPA.

CPS simply stands for Cost Per Sale which means you only get paid when a customer completes a sale.

CPA stands for Cost Per Action which means that you can get paid just for having a customer input some of their data, like an email address or a phone number.

The process for setting these up is the same as a standard affiliate offer.  The only difference is that your affiliate link will take your visitors to different types of sign up pages.

You can play around with these different types of offers to see what works best for your site and your type of traffic (people who visit your site).

Again don't promote anything that you wouldn't use yourself, as some offers may seem incredibly enticing but will ultimately leave your visitors with a poor shopping experience, and a poor impression of your website.

A word of  warning though. There are quite a few unscrupulous vendors out there who wont pay you, so be very careful and check them out before you do any promoting.  It's a simple matter to contact them once you are registered.  If they don't or wont reply then of course you shouldn't risk promoting their product(s).

To finish.

If you think you could be a successful affiliate or you just want to see if you have what it takes then by all means go for it.  There are lots of great products you can promote and you can certainly earn a decent income from the Internet.  An added bonus is of course you can do it from the comfort of your own home.

Feel free to visit my own sites and the sites promoting products on this site.  Perhaps they will give you some ideas and help you decide if you want to become an Internet Marketer.  If you decide to give it a go, I do wish you every success, and a long and happy career as an affiliate.
