How to Connect Landscape Timbers
- 1). Use a shovel to dig a 3 to 4-inch deep trench and lay the first layer of timbers into the trench. Push the timbers up against each other as tightly as possible.
- 2). Start the second level of timbers at one corner so it overlaps the timbers below it.
- 3). Install the second row, making sure edges are tightly pushed against each other.
- 4). Drill a 1/2-inch hole in the center top of the timber and 1/2 inch into the bottom timber.
- 5). Use a sledgehammer to drive a 12-inch spike, such as a short piece of rebar, into the hole until it is flush with the top of the uppermost timber. Repeat the process to insert spikes at each corrners.
- 6). Position additional stakes every 4 feet along the remaining length of the timbers to add additional stability.
