Maggot therapy is a new way to help the wounds in the human body heal at a faster pace.
It is very creepy to imagine having maggots crawl under your skin for healing the wound.
However, maggots are also related to something that is rotting.
People who do not know much about the new found therapy have less faith in it and also the role of maggots in healing a wound is largely misunderstood.
In maggot therapy, young maggots are used to excrete some digestive juices into the flesh and this eases up the rotting flesh and there fore helps to clean up the wound more effectively by removing the dead cells.
Only fresh and clean flesh is left after the maggots and the rotting flesh are removed.
This helps the wound to heal much faster.
The American Medical Association has somehow taken to the theory and is also confident that this is a much better approach for healing the wound.
When it comes to insurance companies several companies have not yet recognized the maggot therapy and refusing to cover those who undergo this treatment.
Never the less it does cost money to get it done and the insurance company not footing the bill makes it worse for the patients.
However, this therapy is not something new and it was being used during the war period to clean up wounds.
It has also been established as a much better approach to antibiotics.
Nonetheless, if you have to undergo such a therapy, it is better to check with the insurance company in advance if you are covered for it.
