Grilled Banana Splits You will need: 8 wooden skewers - 6- inch to 8-inch size 2 large and firm bananas.
Peel and cut into 1 inch pieces 1/4 of a small pineapple, peeled, cored, and cut into 1- to 1 1/2-inch pieces 8 large fresh strawberries 2 Tablespoons butter, melted 1 teaspoon brandy, rum, or pineapple juice Vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate ice cream Caramel, chocolate and any one of your favorite ice cream topping Chopped walnuts To prepare: To avoid burning your skewers, soak them warm water for 30 minutes before you place on the grill.
Drain.
Now thread banana chunks, pineapple pieces, and strawberries onto skewers with 1/4" space between pieces.
It is easier to place all of the banana pieces, the pineapple pieces and strawberries each onto their own skewer for easier grilling as one piece of fruit may take longer than the others.
The next step is to combine melted butter and brandy in a small bowl.
Brush the mixture over all of the fruit.
Lightly coat the unheated grill rack with cooking spray before heating.
You may grill your banana split ingredients on a charcoal grill or a gas grill.
Charcoal grill directions: Grill skewers of food on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium heat for 5-10 minutes.
You will see that the bananas are slightly browned.
Remember to turn the skewers occasionally so one side does not burn.
Gas grill directions: Preheat your grill.
Make sure that the heat is medium-high.
Place skewers on grill rack over heat.
Cover and grill as directed above.
Remove skewers from the grill.
Now for the delicious part.
Scoop ice cream into serving dishes.
Drizzle each scoop with the different ice cream toppings.
Sprinkle with nuts if you so choose.
Top with fruit skewers and serve immediately.
If you are trying to cut calories you could simply eat the fruit.
You may want to treat yourself to a small dipping of the ice cream toppings.
Make it somewhat like a fun fondue party for yourself.
You can give your guests the option of eating the grilled banana split as the recipe calls for or you can give them the option of eating it light.
