    • 1). Verify the software program you plan on using is certified by the Canada Revenue Agency. Each year a list of certified software companies for the most current Netfile program is published on Netfile.gc.ca in January. Only tax returns processed through a CRA-certified program can file with Netfile.

    • 2). Prepare your income tax return with a CRA-certified software program or through a tax return website running certified software. Some website programs will offer free returns to those eligible. Check for any software updates for your computer before starting the income tax forms.

    • 3). Make sure you are eligible to file online. Most Netfile software programs alert you if the return cannot be filed online. Even if you can't file through Netfile, using one of the certified software programs is a helpful way to prepare your tax returns without using a paper form. Print and mail the hard copy.

    • 4). File your tax return online if you're eligible. The software program automatically determines eligibility and lets you know. Verify that all information is correct and print a copy for your records.

    • 5). Click "Save" to save your tax file onto the hard drive of your computer. Save the document as a ".tax" extension in the new window. The Netfile system can accept only documents ending in ".tax" extensions.

    • 6). Go to the CRA Netfile website and enter your Social Insurance Number and date of birth into the correct fields. Enter your personal access code. You will not be allowed to file a tax return on Netfile without a personal access code. The access codes are usually mailed to you once a year at the beginning of the tax year. Apply online at the CRA website for a personal access code if you did not receive one or misplaced it.

    • 7). Search for the previously saved ".tax" file on your computer. Copy and paste the file extension to Netfile by clicking on "Attaching a Return," then the browse button. The "Choose File to Upload" box will appear. Paste the path extension to the ".tax" file on your computer into the "File Name Field." Click the "Open" button and wait for Netfile's verification that the file was uploaded correctly.

    • 8). Expect a confirmation of receipt if the upload to Netfile is successful. Save the confirmation for future reference. If the file was not saved correctly as a ".tax" extension, the Netfile system will not accept the upload.
