How to Adjust Toilets
- 1). Remove the toilet tank lid and place it where it will not get damaged.
- 2). Flush the toilet and notice if the flapper sets down completely and firmly onto the hole in the bottom of the tank. If the toilet constantly fills, the problem may be that the flapper is allowing water to get by and lower the level in the tank.
- 3). Disconnect the chain from the handle and connect it to a link that is closer to the end of the chain. This will allow the flapper to set down lower and cover the hole in the bottom of the tank. If the chain is tangled, it may be too long. Shorten it to prevent tangling. A tangled chain also keeps the flapper from covering the hole completely.
- 4). Locate the adjustment screw on the flush valve. The flush valve has a float mechanism that shuts off the water when it reaches the desired level. The float level must be adjusted if there is not enough water flowing into the bowl from the tank when the toilet is flushed. The adjustment screw is located at the base of the float arm. Turn the screw clockwise to raise the level of the float, thereby allowing more water to fill the tank.
- 5). Replace the toilet tank lid after making the required adjustment.
