Tricks to Wake Up Early
- Before you go to bed, open the curtains or the blinds. In the morning, the light will stream through the windows, allowing a gradual, natural wake-up that is less jarring than an alarm clock. If your bedroom does not get much light in the morning, set the lights on a timer so they turn on a few minutes before it's time to wake up. Even if you still use an alarm, the light will allow a less shocking wake-up.
- A reason to get up can be good motivation to get out of bed early. Help yourself wake up by scheduling early activities, like a workout with a friend or an early meeting. Having to be accountable to someone else can be an extra motivator. If you can, choose something fun so waking up is associated with a pleasurable activity instead of a negative one. You might have breakfast or coffee with a friend, plan a shopping trip or schedule a private lesson or class.
- If you are continuously sleep deprived, getting up early will be more difficult. Make sure that you do whatever you need to do to get enough sleep: go to bed when you are tired, move around meetings or record your favorite television programs. In addition, focus on the quality of your sleep. Turn off the television and use a noise machine or fan to block out background noises, which can cause less restful sleep.
- Instead of hitting the Snooze button over and over again in the morning, get right out of bed. Prolonging the wake-up process is unpleasant and results in low-quality sleep; the Snooze button becomes a crutch. Instead, jump right out of bed and walk out of your bedroom to remove the temptation of climbing back in. It will be easier to get moving when you are out from the comfortable space.
