Spanish Explorers are believed to have discovered the Palo Duro Canyon in Canyon, Texas, the next largest canyon in the United States, after the Grand Canyon. "Palo Duro" is Spanish for "hard wood," a reference to the many mesquite and juniper trees in the area. This is true "cowboy" ranch-style Texas, and no trip to the area is complete without experiencing at least some of the many horse-related events in nearby Canyon, Texas. - Visitors will find the Palo Duro Riding Stables right before the entrance of Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Since 1962, the Stables has provided horseback riding for both first-time and experienced riders. Their horses are gentle, and you can ride the miles of trails in the Palo Duro Canyon with their experienced staff. However, smaller children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. To ride, just bring sunscreen and insect repellent, and wear regular shoes or cowboy boots as "city" shoes are not appropriate.

A cast of more than 60 singers, actors and dancers perform a family-friendly drama that recreates the history of the early settlers of the Texas Panhandle. Enjoy a steak dinner before the show on their covered patio, offered by the Big Texan Steak Ranch.
