How to Make a Weed Cutter

    • 1). Unplug the adapter from the laptop and the wall socket. Use a utility knife to cut off the end of a laptop power adapter that goes into the laptop, leaving the power cord intact.

    • 2). Pull apart the wire leads. Use wire strippers to strip approximately 1 inch of insulation from the end of each wire.

    • 3). Plug the power adapter into a working wall outlet. Touch the wires from the power adapter to the wires from the motor. Determine which wire combination powers the motor. For safety's sake, hold only the insulated part of the wires when you touch the bare wires to the motor.

    • 4). Unplug the adapter from the wall outlet. Secure the adapter wires to the motor wires with electrical tape in the combination that powers the motor.

    • 5). Attach the motor to the shovel handle with a hose clamp. Position the motor so its housing reaches approximately 2 inches above the lower portion of the shovel handle. Tighten the screw on the hose clamp to affix the motor.

    • 6). Place a wood screw through the clamp and into the handle from the side to prevent the clamp from moving.

    • 7). Use a utility knife to cut the bleach jug in half around the circumference in the center of the jug. Your cut should be approximately underneath the handle so one half has a handle and the other does not.

    • 8). Measure the diameter of the shovel handle. Use a drill bit of approximately the same size to make a hole into the center of the jug portion without the handle. Place the jug portion onto the shovel handle on the end of the shovel handle with the motor. The jug portion will form the cutter cover.

    • 9). Drill three holes in the empty jug's neck through the bottle and into the other end of the shovel handle. Secure the jug to the handle with screws. This is your cutter's handle.

Drill a hole at the top portion of the PVC pipe cap to fit the drive shaft of the motor. Drill an additional hole on each side of the cap opposite from each other and evenly spaced.

Tighten a nut and washer on the drive shaft at the top of the threading. Place the drive shaft through the hole in the PVC pipe cap's top portion. Attach a second nut and washer to the threading to secure the pipe cap to the drive shaft.

Thread two 6-inch pieces of trimmer string through the holes in the PVC pipe cap. Make a big knot at each end of the strings so they won't fall out of the holes. These strings will cut the weeds.

Attach the laptop power adapter to the shovel handle with zip ties.

Use an extension cord to plug the adapter into a wall power outlet. This will allow you to use the weed cutter at longer distances.
