Evergreen shrubs and trees make perfect natural privacy fences and add year-round color and, sometimes, beautiful flowers to your garden. Before you plant, make sure the area is well drained and determine how much sun your natural fence will receive. Space your plants at the recommended distance. Planting too close together can undermine the health of your plants. Instead, plant in staggered double rows to assure your privacy as soon as possible. - This dense evergreen shrub makes a perfect privacy fence in USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9. It thrives in partial sun and grows to 7 feet tall and wide. Rhododendron needs regular watering, especially during the hot summer months. Beautiful pink flowers attract butterflies in late spring. Feed this plant with an acidic fertilizer after it blooms in the spring. This is also a good time to prune your shrub. Spread a thick layer of mulch around the base of your plants in the summer to keep the roots cool.
- Alphonse Karr bamboo is a type of clumping bamboo that is deer resistant and can quickly grow up to 35 feet tall. This evergreen grows in partial or full sun in zones 8 to 10. Water your bamboo frequently, especially the first year, to develop a strong root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer in the spring before new growth appears. New stems have a pinkish tinge before maturing into a deep yellow striped with green. This is one of the least invasive types of bamboo.
- This large flowering shrub grows quickly up to 10 feet tall and wide. Clusters of fragrant white flowers bloom in the spring and mature into displays of dark red fruit in the fall. This evergreen is deer resistant and prefers partial to full sun. Prune your viburnum in the early spring or late winter. Water regularly, especially in the hot summer months.
- Growing only 2 feet wide, but 15 feet tall, blue arrow juniper is the perfect choice for your garden if you need a narrow privacy fence. This evergreen is drought tolerant once established and grows in full sun. Blue arrow juniper has no flowers but the foliage is an attractive bluish-green and is deer resistant. Feed this juniper with a general purpose fertilizer in the spring before new growth appears. Blue arrow juniper thrives from zones 4 to 9.
