How to Change a Tire Without a Pinching Tube
- 1). Remove the tire and rim from the bicycle. Flip the quick release latch on the hub to the "open" position, remove the axle bolt and pull the rim from the frame. For rear tires, push the chain derailleur forward to release chain tension and remove the chain from the gearing before pulling the rim out of the frame.
- 2). Break the bead (the thick edge of the tire that sits in the inside groove of the rim) on one side by inserting the end of one tire iron between the tire and the rim and levering the bead over the edge of the channel.
- 3). Place the other tire iron between the tire and the rim next to the first iron and slide the second iron 6-inches away. Lever that area of the bead over the rim. Remove the first iron and insert it next to the second, slide it away and lever the bead out. Repeat this around the entire rim until one side of the tire is on the outside of the rim.
- 4). Remove the tire from the rim by pulling the bead on the other side of the tire over the rim. Make sure to pull it over the same side of the rim that the first bead was on, not the side that it was against when inflated. Otherwise, the first bead may fall back inside the rim.
- 5). Unscrew and remove the cap from the tire tube stem and push the stem out of the hole in the rim. Pull the tube out of the rim channel.
- 6). Lay out the replacement tube and visually inspect it to make sure it has no damage.
- 7). Pump just enough air into the tube so that it begins to hold its circular shape. Not too much or it will not fit over the rim edge and into rim channel.
- 8). Line the tube stem up with the stem hole in the rim. Push it through just enough to hold the stem in place but not all the way. Pull the rest of the tube over the rim edge and into the channel.
- 9). Starting at the tube stem area, pry the bead of the tire over the rim edge and over the tube so that the bead lays against the opposite side of the rim and inside the channel. Do this all the way around the wheel.
- 10
Pry the bead that is still outside the rim over the edge and into the channel all the way around the wheel. Inflate the tire to its proper pressure and reinstall the tire on the bicycle. Don't forget to switch the quick release latch back to the "locked" position once the axle bolt is in place.
