Sunday School Ideas for Thanks to God
- No matter what the age of the believer, counting your blessings and saying thanks to God is a wonderful idea. Sunday school classes provide a powerful place to learn this habit. Set aside a testimony time for class members to list their blessings for the week, limiting each member to a few minutes of class time. Create a blessings board where class members can post their blessings and share prayers of thanksgiving. Encourage thankful prayers and posts on your Sunday-school blog or social media page.
- The Bible contains many verses that give thanks to God for the blessings of life. Commit to a study of some of these passages, such as Hannah's song of praise in 1 Samuel 2:1-10, David's Song of Praise in 1 Chronicles 16:8-36, and many of the Psalms. Use a word search such as the one found in Bible Gateway to locate Scripture texts that encourage believers to give thanks to God, tell them how to demonstrate thankfulness, or list things for which to be thankful.
- Sing songs of thanksgiving in your Sunday-school class. Some of the praise and worship choruses that give thanks to God come directly out of Scripture, and others come from the heart of the author. Some options for your thanksgiving song library include "Count Your Blessings" by Johnson Oatman Jr., "In Everything Give Thanks" by Lanny Wolfe, and "Thank You, Lord" by Seth and Bessie Sykes.
- Share a thanksgiving meal with your Sunday-school class any time of the year. A class potluck breakfast offers the opportunity for families to get together and thank God for the blessings of life before church. Class members share prayers of thanks and testimonies of God's faithfulness. Alternatively, the Sunday-school class could sponsor a churchwide time of thanksgiving that includes food, sharing of blessings and dedicated prayers of thanks.
- Challenge Sunday-school class groups to put action to thankfulness. Using the theme "Giving Thanks to God," classes choose various service projects that highlight things for which they are thankful. Possible projects include participating in a Habitat for Humanity build, collecting food for the hungry, collecting supplies for a homeless shelter, donating funds for a mission trip or sponsoring an evangelism outreach. A class representative explains the class members are thankful to God for home, provision, food, salvation, family or all the blessings of life.
