Instructions on How to Change the String on a Weed Eater

    • 1). Unplug the weed eater. If the model is gas powered, disconnect the spark plug, which is located just on the surface of the engine. This will ensure that the tool cannot accidentally activate while you work.

    • 2). Remove the cover from the weed eater. Most models require you to either turn the cover or to depress certain tabs to release the lock. Once you remove the cover, you will expose the string spool.

    • 3). Pull the spool out of its place in the trimmer head. If there is a spring attached, carefully set the spring aside to allow you room to work with the spool.

    • 4). Remove any remaining old string on the spool. Wipe down the spool with a damp rag to remove grass or dirt.

    • 5). Cut replacement nylon cord with a utility knife or wire cutters. Each weed eater will hold a different amount of cord, and many use different sizes. Use only the manufacturer-recommended size and type of cord to make sure it will work smoothly with the model.

    • 6). Thread one end of the cord into the holding slot at the center of the spool. If your weed eater features two strings, there will be two slots; thread one end of each cord through a slot. The slot holds the string in place while you work.

    • 7). Wind the string around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow drawn on the spool. Wind in smooth, even passes to avoid bunching or knotting. Continue until you have about 6 inches of string remaining.

    • 8). Hook the remaining string into the catch eyelet on the edge of the spool. If necessary, wind the second string and hook that one through as well.

    • 9). Set the spool back into place in the trimmer head. Thread the end of the string through the eyelet on the trimmer head, and then unhook it from the catch eyelet so that it rests solely in the head. This will allow the string to feed through properly. Again, if you have two strings you will have to do this for each string.

Replace the cover. Remember to reconnect the spark plug or plug the tool back in before using again.
