Pirate-Themed Games
- Create a map on a large piece of poster board. The map should show a treasure somewhere in the layout. Cut an X out of black card stock for each player and place a piece of double-sided tape on the back. Blindfold the children, then spin each child around three times and let them go. The children must place their Xs where they think the treasure is located on the map. The child who places his or her X closest to the treasure wins the game.
- Give each child a plastic cup with a slit in the bottom. Hand out candy canes and instruct the children to wrap them in tin foil. Have the children place the cup over one hand and slide the bottom of the candy cane in through the slit. The kids can grab onto the straight end of the candy cane and use it to retrieve pretzels from a large bowl. Tell the kids not to start until you say "Go." Count out 60 seconds and yell "Stop." The child who hooked the most pretzels is the winner of the game.
- Paint a large box to resemble a treasure chest. You can use brown or black paint for the base color of the chest. Paint in such details as gold hinges and a black lock with a keyhole. Cut three holes in the top or front of the box. The holes must be large enough for bean bags to fit through. Assign a point value for each hole. Designate how far away the children must stand to throw the bean bags, which can depend on the age of the children playing. Give each child a chance to toss three bean bags at the treasure chest. The child who scores the most points wins. You can also have the children play several rounds before declaring a winner, to make the game last longer.
- Fill a small shoebox with candy and inexpensive toys. Decorate the shoebox to look like a treasure chest and hide it somewhere in the house or the backyard. You can paint the box brown with gold hinges and a black lock with a keyhole. Create clues on index cards or pieces of yellow card stock to give the children. Each clue must lead to the location of the next clue. After five or six clues, make one that leads directly to the treasure. To make the game competitive, you can divide the children into teams. The first team to find the treasure gets to share the booty.
