How to Care for Lawn Grubs

    • 1). Lower the amount of water you give the grass in July and August to kill off grubs during their development phase. They require rain to grow, so keeping the soil dry increases egg mortality.

    • 2). Care for your lawn properly to reduce the amount of damage the grubs can wreck. Cut the grass blades so that you are only removing a 1/3 of the blade at a time. Fertilize your grass according to the needs of your variety--for example, Kentucky Bluegrass needs 1 lb. of active nitrogen twice a growing season. Apply fertilizer in the spring, late summer or early fall.

    • 3). Apply a grub control pesticide using the instructions on the side of the packaging. You must apply and mix according to these instructions to prevent accidental poisoning as well as fines from your local government for misapplication of a pesticide. Apply the pesticide in July when the grubs are young and vulnerable after hatching.
