How to Make a Tie for Toddlers

    • 1). Tie a small Windsor knot in the tie, leading with the narrow end of the tie rather than the wider end. Place the knot so the resulting tie is the desired length.

    • 2). Cut the knot from the tie, leaving a few inches of neck material protruding from each side of the knot.

    • 3). Turn over the tie and sew the knot in place so it won’t come undone. You should be left with a small, knotted tie with a section of the neck removed.

    • 4). Measure the child’s collar with the measuring tape and cut a piece of buttonhole elastic to this length. Buttonhole elastic is fitted with small button holes every 1/2 inch or so, allowing for the elastic to be secured with buttons to make it longer or shorter.

    • 5). Sew an end of the elastic to one end of the back of the remaining neck material. Fold the edges of the material over the elastic and sew them in place to prevent the cut ends from fraying.

    • 6). Fold in the other side of neck material a 1/2 inch and sew it in place to prevent the end from fraying. Sew the button onto the back of the material.

    • 7). Loop the tie around the child’s collar and secure the elastic to the button. The neck may be adjusted to fit using the button closure.
