How to Remove Glue From Behind Plastic Tiles

    • 1). Work outdoors. Otherwise, ventilate your workspace to help with circulation and avoid hazardous fumes. Put on rubber gloves before handling the solvent to protect your skin from exposure to the chemical.

    • 2). Lay down newspaper or plastic sheeting onto an open, flat surface. Place the tiles upside-down on the lining, with the glue side exposed.

    • 3). Scrape off as much of the tile glue as possible using a putty knife or paint scraper. This minimizes the amount of chemical solution needed to dissolve the remainder, which will create less of a mess as a result.

    • 4). Apply a commercial adhesive remover according to the manufacturer's instructions; such products are available in brushable formulas or aerosol applications, and are designed to soften even the strongest of flooring adhesives.

    • 5). Allow the remover to soak the glue for the waiting period indicated on the product label. Once the residue has softened, use a scraper blade to begin loosening it from the surface.

    • 6). Reapply the solvent as needed, as it will eventually evaporate even before the glue has been entirely removed. Repeat the same procedure for each of the desired plastic tiles.
