    Gift Garlands

    • Gift garland adds a festive ambiance to your holiday decor. Cut Styrofoam cups in half. Cover them with wrapping paper and glue small bows on them to make them look like Christmas presents. Thread the bottoms of the cups onto a long thread using a needle, so that you have a garland of Christmas presents. This makes an ideal decorating activity to do with older kids.

    An Indoor Christmas Grove

    • Evergreen trees, or "Christmas trees," are of the most traditional Christmas decoration. However, instead of the traditional Christmas tree look, why not try to recreate some of the outdoor "winter wonderland" indoors? Instead of buying one large tree, buy several small trees. Clear a large area in one room and place them all around it. Hang them with decorations in the traditional way, and then cover them all with spray-on snow from a can. You can make your living room look like the "village green" at Christmas time.

    Candy Wreaths

    • Make traditional Christmas wreaths by tying small boughs of evergreen or holly together into a circle. However, instead of the traditional garlands or fruit decorating the wreaths, hang Christmas candies from them on strings. This way guests can snack from your holiday wreaths. Alternatively, make a wreath Advent calendar by hanging as many candies as there are days until Christmas. Your family can then take one treat off for every day of the countdown. It is traditional to hang a wreath on the front door. However, hanging them in various places around the home can bring the season indoors.

    Jellybean Garlands

    • Popcorn garlands provide an old-fashioned look to your home at Christmas. For a more modern variation on this old tradition, use jellybeans instead of popcorn and cranberries. Use a needle to weave them on a string and decorate trees, banisters or mantels with them.

    Gingerbread Man Ornaments

    • Make gingerbread man ornaments out of sandpaper, construction paper, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cut a gingerbread man shape out of the sandpaper and trace that shape onto a piece of brown construction paper. Cut out that shape and glue the two shapes together, so that the grit of the sandpaper is exposed. Rub a cinnamon stick and a whole nutmeg over the sandpaper. Thread a loop of thread through the top of the head with a needle. Use paint to add "frosting" if you like. The result will be an ornament that not only looks like a gingerbread man but smells like one too.
