Duration

• If you are required by the state of Illinois to hold an SR-22, you will need to continue to renew the certificate for 36 months from the time it was issued. It will typically have to be renewed once a year by your insurance company. After this 36-month period, providing that your driving record has remained clean, you will be able to cancel your SR-22 and obtain regular insurance.
  
  

Renewal

• You must renew the SR-22 a minimum of 45 days in advance of its expiry date. If you do not renew by 15 days before the expiry, your insurance company is required by law to notify the Illinois Secretary of State's office. This will mean that your driver's license is automatically suspended. You can remove this suspension by reinstating your SR-22.
  
  

Liability

• Only certain insurance companies will write an SR-22 certificate, so you may have to shop around to obtain one. In Illinois you must purchase an SR-22 that has coverage of at least $20,000 for one person killed or injured in an accident, $40,000 for more than one person, and $15,000 in property damage.
  
  

Alternative

• If you do not want to obtain an SR-22, Illinois provides an alternate method of proving your financial responsibility. You must deposit $55,000 in cash or securities with the State Treasurer, or file either a surety bond or real estate bond.
