Help... I lost my hearing at the GYM!

Everyday, millions of Americans wake-up at the crack of dawn to go to their local gym. Many participate in group exercises like aerobics, weight lifting, spin (bicycle) etc. The average person in these classes is NOT aware that their hearing is being damaged by the loud music played in these small rooms where these classes are held. Worst, few are proactive enough to wear hearing protection while participating in these activities.

Hearing protection at the gym?

While it may not seem natural to wear hearing protection during exercises classes, the average group class exposes the average participant with over 100 dB for 30 minutes or more. Keep in mind that it only takes 75dB to cause permanent hearing damage. That means if you participate in these events, you could be harming your hearing if you do not wear hearing protection.

Hearing loss is progressive

Since hearing loss is progressive, you may not notice it at first, most likely, it will affect you gradually over time. As your exposure continues the damage gets progressively acute, over time you will have difficulty hearing your TV or radio. Eventually, the continued exposure will lead to complete hearing loss.

Are you ready to be deaf?

If you think is great to be deaf, then is okay for you NOT to protect your hearing. Is no coincidence that today, the hearing aid business is one of the fastest growing business segments. Is not just retirees or older people needing hearing aids because of old age, is also people under 35 needing to supplement their hearing because of they lost part of their hearing acuity to loud music, loud noises and to the so familiar gym exercise class.

What can you do?

If you do not want to join 37 million American with hearing impairment, all you have to do is take the initiate and limit your exposure to loud noises.

To protect your hearing you should:

  • Wear hearing protection devices (ear plugs, ear muffs) while doing any activity that exposes you to loud noises; lawn mowing, vacuuming the house, attending exercise classes, going to concerts, or clubs

  • When using any type of power tool always wear hearing protection devices

  • When shooting guns, hunting or practicing at the shooting range; wear hearing protection

  • If you use fireworks or are near any exploding fireworks; use hearing protection

  • If you watch TV try to limit the volume to the minimum setting that will allow you to hear

  • If you use headphones, always set the volume to the minimum possible setting that will allow you to hear

Is it foolish to wear hearing protection? Ask that to the 37 millions of Americans of all ages that have lost their hearing to loud noises. And ask yourself the following question; How much is my hearing worth?
