How to Grow & Breed Meal Worms

    • 1). Fill a wooden box or tray halfway with cornmeal and flour. Add into the flour and meal some crinkled newspaper to keep the mixture from compacting.

    • 2). Add a potato cut into pieces on to the top of the flour and meal mixture. You can also use a carrot, an apple or a couple of banana peels. Use only one of the fruit wastes to add moisture.

    • 3). Pour mealworms into the wooden tray. Cover the top of the tray with cheesecloth. This prevents the adult beetles from escaping once the larvae reach maturity. Leave the tray undisturbed for several weeks. This allows the mealworms to mature.

    • 4). Keep a close watch on the interior of the box or tray through the cheesecloth for adult beetles.

    • 5). Prepare a second tray from the steps above. Transfer the adult beetles to the second tray. Allow the beetles to lay eggs. Watch for the larvae as they appear.

    • 6). Move the small mealworm larvae back to the first growing tray. Grow the worms to the desired size. Rotate the trays in this manner for a constant supply of mealworms.

    • 7). Clean out and discard the old flour mixture when it begins to smell moldy or rancid.
