Job Security, A Phrase From the Past?

We are hearing the 'R' word a lot more these days, recession.
Some employers have identified that costs can be cut, improving their bottom line, by letting older workers go.
Older workers may be earning higher salaries', or they may be seen as raising health care costs.
How do you pick up the pieces when a job loss occurs before you are ready? If you are out of work, over 45, and having difficulty replacing your previous position, you're not alone.
A New York Times article indicated that age discrimination is often linked to layoffs and downsizing.
As the recession tightens the job market, additional publications note that workers that take early retirement or a buyout often can't afford to retire & search unsuccessfully for work.
Stettner from the National Employment Law Project told the Post, 'When people are losing good jobs these days, they have a very hard time getting back to the type of job they had before.
' An additional Washington Post article quoted Marshall of the Baltimore County Workforce Development Center in Hunt Valley: '[F]or a skilled worker who has experience and credentials, finding a job that matches their skill and experience is like reaching for the brass ring on the carousel.
'A lot of people are grabbing for it, and only few will get it.
' A career of outstanding work performance no longer is linked with job security.
Workers who have played by the rules and have invested years in a company are often shocked when the compact between them and their employer is suddenly broken.
Early in 2008 the Columbus Dispatch quoted a displaced worker: 'I was the top sales producer in my group and made the most money for the group that year.
'It was inconceivable to me that I would be let go.
' Employers are often focused on their short term balance statement.
Many employees have found that they were living in the past by believing in the myth of job security.
Instead of "Job Security," let's think about income security and how we can promote it.
By identifying our strengths & unique skills, one can reinvent themselves.
Your individual combination of talents & strengths is what truly belongs to you.
It is what has served you in your past work life.
Take time to assess these unique attributes and resources.
Look for new opportunities on the internet or in your local community.
