Meditation Techniques for Novices
When you want to learn how to meditate, you'll want to keep these tips and techniques in mind so you won't get too discouraged and abandon your practice right when you're at that turning point of making things work.
Wandering is natural First of all, remember that meditating takes time and that it won't come quickly.
You're mind wanders and that is natural.
Keep bringing it back to your focal point without comment or without emotion.
Focus on leading your thoughts back to a specific thing like a rock or a pond.
Walk your thought back to 'that place".
Think of it as a game.
If you try, try and try harder, you're meditating practice will be short lived.
The whole purpose of meditating is to relax.
You can't force yourself to relax.
You have to let it happen.
The same goes for meditation.
You have to let it come to you rather than make it happen.
So play like it's a game.
There is no winner or loser, just some time to yourself.
Enjoy the process.
Laugh when you mess up.
It's OK! Anything you do will be beneficial.
Time is your friend It's with practice and time that you'll notice a difference in your thoughts, your way of acting that meditation is so well known for.
Just set aside some time each day but do it for a complete month.
It doesn't matter if you meditate 5 minutes today and 20 minutes tomorrow.
All you want to do is get your mind in the habit of "going to that quiet place".
It doesn't matter how well or poorly you do it.
In the beginning you want to just be able to "check it off your list".
At some point it will become natural with time and practice.
Use a Sound for Help Get a repetitive sound like the ticking of a clock, the gurgling of water flowing or the soft pitter-patter of rain falling to help you go to that place of 'no real thought'.
You can use the clock's tick-tock and repeat it in your mind, closing your eyes and swaying with the words, 'tick', 'tock'.
Of course any water sounds help to relax the mind and stop thinking.
There are many nature-sound CDs out there that you can download and listen to when you want to meditate.
The important thing to remember when you want to meditate is that there is no right or wrong way of going about it.
What is natural for one person might feel really funny to someone else.
The purpose of meditating is to quiet the mind and relax it.
So follow your own natural instincts and have fun with it.
