    In Children

    • Children are more susceptible to molluscum contagiosum, likely because they have not yet developed immunity to the virus. It is easily spread through contact with the infected area. They appear like warts, but with an indentation in the center, and they may become red or inflamed. They are common in parts of the body that rub together, such as under the arm or in the groin.

    OTC Treatment

    • Although they disappear over the course of several months or years, molluscum contagiosum and warts can be treated by over-the-counter methods. These include salicylic acid gels or plasters. They cause little discomfort, but it may take several applications to see results. Always check with a doctor to make sure the growth is not something more serious.

    Professional Treatment

    • For adults and older children, the most effective removal method is cryotherapy (freezing) with liquid nitrogen in a dermatologist's office. This method rarely results in scarring. Other treatment may include scraping, injections or laser therapy.
