Approved Gifts for Overseas Military
- Sending care packages to military personnel overseas has more rules than sending packages domestically. This is due to customs rules and requirements in the country where you're sending the package to, as well as restrictions by the Postal Service and Department of Defense. Restrictions are put in place to keep you and your loved one safe. Instead, send gifts that are approved and appreciated by military personnel.
- Edible treats that won't spoil and are easily consumed are approved for those serving overseas. While chocolate is approved, it isn't a good idea since it can melt. Treats that are typically requested, according USMChangout.com, are beef jerky sticks, hard candy, cups of noodles, cereal bars, crackers, individual packages of chips or cereal, cookies and pudding snacks. Cans of soup or fruit with pop tops are allowed, though fresh fruit is not. Include drink mixes, such as presweetened lemonade or other powder mixes. Avoid pork products or bi-products, especially if your soldier is in the Middle East.
- Send personal items that will help him think of home, such as his favorite bar of soap, shampoo or deodorant. Besides basic hygiene products, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss and mouthwash, send him other personal items he can use, such as toilet paper, bug repellent, shaving cream, disposable razors, lip balm, hand sanitizer, sunscreen and lotion. These items should be in tubes, as aerosol sprays are prohibited. First aid supplies, cotton swabs and personal travel packages of tissue is also acceptable to send. Include feminine hygiene products for a female.
- Personal entertainment items are popular with deployed personnel because they don't have the luxuries and comfort items from home. Help her pass time with hand-held games, playing cards, travel-sized board games, dominoes and poker chips. Keep the items small and compact if possible, so they are easy for her to transport when needed. Video games, DVDs, CDs, magazines and books are okay, as long as they do not contain offensive images or material. Batteries that are still in their original packages are ideal. Remove batteries from objects before sending them. Paper, blank cards, pens, mechanical pencils and postage are items that can keep her connected to her loved ones. Prepaid gift cards or phone cards are ideal as well.
