Gentian Side Effects
- Possible side effects from using gentian include vaginal burning, severe itching, pain, and signs of irritation around the application site. Contact your doctor if any of these symptoms develop after using gentian.
- Before using gentian, it is important to understand the benefits and risk of use. Tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any herbal medication. There have been no tests done on pregnant or breast-feeding women while taking gentian, so if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask your doctor for advice before using it. Also consult with your doctor if you are using any other type of vaginal medications in conjunction with this drug.
- If your symptoms do not improve, or if they worsen, after a few days of using gentian, contact your doctor for an adjusted treatment method. Gentian has been known to come out of the vagina during the course of treatment and may stain both skin and clothing. As a result, it is recommended that patients wear a sanitary pad during treatment.
- Always use this medication exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor and never in dosages larger than what has been recommended on the label. The medication is administered by inserting a tampon (coated with the medication) into the vagina. After approximately three to four hours, remove the tampon and wash your hands thoroughly. If you miss a dosage, take the medication immediately. Never take two dosages at once.
- If an overdose of gentian is suspected, contact your local poison control center and head directly to the nearest emergency room. Gentian is meant for the treatment of fungal infections only and should not be used for any other medical purpose unless specifically prescribed for such by your doctor.
