The Disadvantages of Personal Use of Computers at Work
- One disadvantage of using the computer at or during work for personal reasons comes in the form of accessing external servers and websites that may harm the company's computer network. Downloading virus-laden programs, clicking on links to spam websites and visiting pages with spyware on the Internet can cause an issue for not just you, but for the company as a whole, making sensitive information vulnerable and destroying important company data.
- Getting distracted by browsing the Internet and following link after link to read about a topic not related or relevant to your work can cause you get thrown off track from the tasks and duties at hand. By reading about and searching for topics that are not related of your work, you are throwing your mind in to a different arena, requiring you to regroup prior to getting your actual work done.
- Making postings to social networking sites during work hours about internal operations or updating your status to reflect projects you are working on can be viewed as revealing company secrets and confidential information. Another disadvantage of doing this is your employer seeing that you have extra time for such non-work endeavors.
- Using the computer for personal business and pleasure while at work can create havoc when it comes to trying to find the time to do the work that actually needs to be accomplished. You run the risk of falling behind on deadlines or neglecting important tasks.
