Jobs That Kids Can Do in Summer
- Kids of almost any age can deliver the local newspaper. Typically, newspaper establishments pay per paper delivered. Some paper routes involve collecting subscription fees door-to-door. Kids may have to deliver papers early in the morning, and sometimes they must meet a deadline. For larger routes, kids can stack papers in a wagon. For routes that require only a shoulder bag, kids can ride their bikes.
- Lawn mowing is not a job suitable for younger kids, due to the safety hazards of a lawn mower, especially if it is a push mower. But older kids can mow lawns for parents, relatives and neighbors. They can even advertise their services in a local newspaper. Kids should learn how to use a lawn mower safely before working on their own.
- For kids who love animals, dog walking is a great choice for a summer job. Kids can commit to walking dogs around the block or at a park for neighbors everyday or every other day. This job is best for children who are confident around dogs.
- Even young children can water their parents' or neighbors' garden plants and flowers everyday. Most kids love playing with water. You can teach them how to use it responsibly by carefully watering flowers and other garden flora. Young children will need small watering cans. They can also learn to use a hose, if available.
- Children can learn the pride of entrepreneurship by setting up a car wash in their driveway. Kids can make signs ahead of time and post them on and near their street. Kids will need help gathering appropriate cleaners and cleaning tools.
- Another job for kids is collecting mail for neighbors when they are away. This can involve bringing mail from people's mailboxes by the street or going to the post office, if the community receives mail in post office boxes. Children can practice organizational skills by keeping neighbors' mail separate from their parents'.
