How to Paint Satin Cloth

    • 1). Spread the disposable tablecloth over your work surface. Lay the satin item you are painting on the tablecloth. The tablecloth protects your work surface from paint that soaks through the satin. Select any satin item you desire, whether it be a plain-colored throw pillow or a scarf.

    • 2). Place a stencil over the part of the satin you want to paint. Depending on the look you want to achieve, the stencil you choose will vary. For example, grapes and foliage stencils serve as useful choices for a decorative pillow that is part of a wine country theme. Use your imagination.

    • 3). Squeeze a dime-sized amount of fabric paint on the paper plate. This serves as your pallete. Do this for each color of fabric paint you want to use for the design.

    • 4). Dip the tip of a paintbrush into one of the colors of paint.

    • 5). Apply the paint to the stenciled-in area of the satin by dabbing lightly. Do not press into the fabric of the satin, because it is porous and will soak up the paint, causing it to bleed out of the lines of the image. Light, dabbing gestures are all that is needed to apply the paint to the surface of the satin. Repeat this step with all of the colors you are using to complete the design. Leave the satin cloth undisturbed for at least four hours. This assures that the paint dries entirely and will not bleed out of the lines of the design.

    • 6). Peel the stencil away from the satin cloth.
