How to Fix an Electric Dog Fence
- 1). Check the collar battery to be sure it is inserted properly with the positive and negative sides of the battery in the right positions. When the battery is not in right, or if it is dead, the collar will not beep to warn the dog of the impending fence charge.
- 2). Keep your dog's coat clipped short in the collar area to get the right impact of the correction. If the dog still ignores the beeping of the collar, check and see if the collar is fit properly. Test the receiver of the collar with a test light. If the light flashes, the collar is working, and it is likely a fit problem where the collar isn't contacting the pet.
- 3). Replace a weak, or dying battery even if the collar lights, but doesn't light up until right on top of the fence line.
- 4). Turn the boundary width control to the clockwise direction to get a greater area of warning.
- 5). Place the second wire of a double loop fence line three to five feet from each other. A "double loop" provides a more secure fence line in areas where extra security is necessary: near busy streets, places with lots of pedestrian or animal traffic or any area where there are a lot of distractions for your dog.
- 6). Turn the boundary width control counterclockwise if it is going off too soon, or even in the house. If the signal is going off in the house make sure your boundary wires are not laid too close. The signal should not transmit through the walls of your house.
- 7). Keep fence line wires three to five feet away from metal objects, appliances, satellite dishes, antennas, telephone wires or any other system. Burying wires too close to these electrical applications can create an inconsistent signal or interfere with the operation of the other devices.
- 8). Check the adapter plug and be sure it is plugged in if all lights are off. If the power still stays off, try a different 120-volt outlet. Replace the adapter if the power remains off after checking the power source.
- 9). Perform a short loop test if routine checks do not work.
- 1). Disconnect wires for the boundary fence.
- 2). Cut a 10-foot section of wire and connect it to the terminals of the existing wire. Use a test light on the receiver collar.
- 3). Lay the new boundary wire in a circle and set the control switch to the "B" position.
- 4). Make the boundary width "10," and if the indicator does not light, the underground fence may need replacing. If the light is on, disconnect an end of the wire from the boundary terminal. The alarm should sound. If it does not sound, replace the transmitter.
- 5). Hold the collar close to the wire. If it does not beep, and the light does not go on, replace the correction collar.
