How to Replace an Oil Pan Gasket
- 1). Purchase the proper oil pan gasket and replacement oil from an auto parts store. Jack the car up on a level area and place jack stands under vehicle.
- 2). Drain oil from the vehicle into a proper, used oil container. Wipe up any excess oil that may have spilled.
- 3). Remove the bolts, using either the socket set or open end wrenches, from the oil pan and place them in a safe location so as not to loose them. Carefully remove the pan from under the vehicle and compare the new gasket with the pattern of the pan. If they are the same, remove the old gasket from the pan and wipe all old oil from the inside.
- 4). Apply a thin coat of blue silicone sealant to the gasket surface on the oil pan and carefully fit the new gasket in place. Apply another thin coat of sealant to the top of the gasket; this will ensure a tight seal for all surfaces. Replace the pan to the engine block in the same order as removal.
- 5). Pour in the new oil, check level on dipstick and look underneath the vehicle for leaks. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and jack. Start the vehicle and check again for leaks.
