    • 1). Format your letter with the date in the top left corner. Skip two lines and enter your supervisor's mailing information. This should include full name, title, company name, address, city, state, zip code and email. It should look like this:

      Jacob Earl Smith, Technical Supervisor

      Direct Energy Corporation

      3325 Hargrove Drive, Ste. 345

      Jasper, TX 72345

      jesmith@directenergyco.com

    • 2). Skip two more lines and add a greeting. Your greeting should include your supervisor's full name followed by a colon for formality.

      Mr. Jacob Greene:

      or

      Dear Mr. Jacob Greene, President:

Skip two more lines and begin your first paragraph.

    • 3). Express your sentiment over your internship coming to an end in the first paragraph. One or two sentences should be enough to express that. For instance you could write,

"I knew that my internship with this company would end, but I am still saddened at it having happened."

      or

"I may have a new job lined up, thanks to all the experience you have given me, but I will miss working here."

    • 4). Immediately switch your tone after your expressed sentiment and focus on the bulk of your letter. For the remainder of the first paragraph, you can include how you appreciated everything you have been taught. If there was a special project that took a lot of your time, you can include a specific reference to that too. If not, a blanket statement will suffice. If it pertains to you, mention one or two people who helped you out and made a difference during your internship.

    • 5). Transition into the next paragraph by mentioning some of the skills you have learned that will make a difference to you in your new job or in the future. This paragraph doesn't have to mention every skill, just the ones that stick out to you. Again, you can mention specific people if necessary, but don't hurt someone's feelings by leaving them out. Be sure to include a statement like,

"Everyone was integral to my learning more about the drafting process and what I should expect when I join my firm."

Do not list your skills or bullet them. It should run with the paragraph. For instance,

"Knowing how to conduct myself with potential customers and learning the ins and outs of clients meetings are valuable skills that I will take with me to my next job."

    • 6). Start your next paragraph by transitioning to how this internship has helped you in you career. You can thank your supervisor again for the opportunity and learning; you do not need to restate skills. Just be sincere and end on a positive note. You could say something like,

"Mr. Jones, again, I want to thank you for selecting me for this internship program. It has been a wonderful three months. I enjoyed getting to know each and every person at Capital Plus. I hope that in the future more students will have this same opportunity, and that it will be as rewarding as mine.

    • 7). Close your letter with a proper closing. Remember, even if you were friends with your supervisor, your business letter still needs to be professional. So end with something like,

      Regards,

      Jeff Withers

      or

      Sincerely,

      Samantha Guzman
