Corrective eye surgery is relatively a simple and uncomplicated procedure using lasers and local anesthesia.
The patient feels little or no discomfort and can respond to the surgeon during the operation which generally lasts for a few minutes.
The basic steps of such procedure involve the removal of the thin transparent protective layer over the cornea, also known as epithelium, to gain access to the corneal tissue.
Using laser technology, a part of the corneal tissue is removed and a new shape and focusing ability is regenerated.
Once the reshaping is complete, the epithelium is regenerated by the body within five to seven days.
During this period a 'bandage' contact lens is used to protect the eyes with periodic drops to keep the eye moist over a period of a few weeks to expedite the healing process.
Frequent visits to the surgeon may be required over a period of two to three months following the corrective eye surgery to appraise the healing process and to keep the eyes free of infection.
