Atlanta, Georgia is a city steeped in history and full of attractions. Due to Atlanta's size and diversity, there is at least one tourist attraction for almost every field of interest and for all ages. History, science, art, nature and even soft drink buffs can visit a wide array of places. - Atlanta's High Museum of Art was originally founded in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association. Its first home was established in 1926 when Mrs. Joseph M. High donated her family's residence on Peachtree Street. The current building was designed by Richard Meier and opened in 1983, after Coca-Cola magnate Robert W. Woodruff offered a $7.5 million challenge grant for a new facility in 1979. The Meier building offers three times the original space of the High Museum, and it contains up to 11,000 pieces of art at any given time. In 2005, Renzo Piano was commissioned to design three new buildings, and the Piano expansion added several new wings and doubled the High Museum's space to 312,000 square feet. The High Museum offers a vast schedule of special exhibitions, a prodigious permanent collection, meeting and event facilities, educational and family programs, the Museum Shop and several dining options.
