Sacramento made itself known during the California Gold Rush of 1848. Thousands of people flocked to the gold fields from 1848 to 1856, looking to make it rich. So many people came to the Sacramento area that they made Sacramento the state capital in 1854. People still flock to this town to visit the state capital and its world-class museums, and to witness Gold Rush history. The Old Sacramento District and its 28 acres reflects the city's pride in its past. Many of the hotels in Sacramento take you back into the past with the same enthusiasm.
