    First Impressions

    • There are many ways to approach an interview. Find your own style that showcases your abilities and personality. When you are under pressure, be calm and clearly explain the talents you can bring to a company. Confidence is shown through how a person is dressed and his or her presence.
      Wear clean, pressed attire that fits properly. A collared shirt and dress slacks are always appropriate for both men and women. One way to stand out is to wear a tasteful, bright-colored shirt . Professional attire tells employers that you take the job seriously.
      Smiles and eye contact are very important to first impressions. Keep eye contact during the conversation to show interest and confidence, without simply staring at the interviewer. An enthusiastic smile signals you are happy to be there, but don't over do it -- you don't want to come across as fake.

    In the Interview

    • To reduce anxiety during the interview, practice ahead of time. One common question employers ask is to describe a challenge you experienced in the workplace and how you solved it. Employers want to hear about past experiences that would giver the interviewer a sense of your professionalism and experience.
      For a position dealing with the public, you should include examples of excellent customer service and grace under pressure. Put a positive spin on negative experiences, although you should never lie or exaggerate. Be sure to discuss what it is you hope to bring to the company, and explain what you want to get from the position.
      An employer wants to hear interest and passion for the position. To do this in the interview, research the company to prepare questions to ask the employer that demonstrates you already know something about the company. Also, ask specific questions about what your potential job would entail.

    Follow-up

    • Employers can meet with many potential employees during the interview process. After an interview, make sure to thank the potential employers for their time and express your sincere interests in the position.
      Unless discouraged to do so, call or e-mail an employer several days after the interview to check on the status of the position. That shows interest and also gives you an idea how long the decision process will take.
