State Cash Assistance

• Single mothers can receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) support each month to help with expenses and needs. You will need to have little to no income to qualify for assistance. The amount you receive is based on the number of children living in your home. TANF expects all parents to complete the work requirement. Single parents are required to participate in 30 hours of work or a work-related activity, such as a job search or training. If you have children under age 6, the work requirement may be reduced to 20 hours a week. Once enrolled in the work program, you are entitled to transportation help, child care or even help obtaining appropriate work atttire. Depending on where you live, it can take up to 45 days to process your TANF application. In some states, emergency TANF is available. New York TANF emergency assistance can supply funds for temporary housing, including a hotel or utility arrears. Contact your local Department of Social Services to apply.
  
  

State Utility Help

• Each state administers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to help people pay their utilities. If you are a single mother and earn less than 60 percent of your state's median income, you may qualify for help with your bill to avoid losing service. You can combine LIHEAP along with the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) to reduce your home's energy consumption. WAP pays for energy-related upgrades and repairs. If you encounter an emergency, such as a disconnection, funds can be awarded within 48 hours. If the emergency is life-threatening, help is available within 18 hours, according to the Illinois Department of Commerce.
  
  

State Food Assistance

• Your state also offers food assistance to help you get groceries. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is available across the country. You must meet the income criteria to qualify for benefits. The program is only open to U.S. citizens or legal immigrants. You will need to provide financial information and proof of identity for yourself and children. Cooperation with child support enforcement is also a requirement for single parents. The amount you receive each month is based on your state, number of children living in the home and your current income from all sources, including child support. SNAP applications can take up to 30 days to process. Emergency food assistance or expedited benefits are also available in some states.
  
  

Private Organizations

• Private organizations generally offer help faster than state programs. Charitable organizations, such as the Salvation Army, offer food, clothing, shelter and even cash grants to help with financial needs. You can receive utility or rent help by bringing a copy of your eviction or shut-off notice. Proof of income is also required. Other programs, including Operation Round Up, can assist you with utilities, rent and other expenses. Women's shelters or resource centers specifically for women may have funds available to help mothers in need.
