Rose Planting For Healthier Roses

There is a form of rose planting known as rose budding.
This is when the canes (stems) of one plant are grafted (plant tissue of one plant is joined to another plant) onto the rootstock (root used in grafting) of another plant rather then growing on its own original roots.
Why take a cane off of one plant and attach it to the root of another? Commercial growers believe this is a better way of rose planting and the greater percentage of what they produce is with this method and with good reason.
The rootstock selected for this process comes from roses which are know for their ability to produce healthy vigorous roots.
Some rose varieties have weak unstable root systems so this is a very workable option.
A branch (cane) is taken from the one rose plant and the bud eye is cut off.
This is a little tiny bud that is located at the junction of where the leaf connects with the stem.
Again, right in the angle of where they connect you will see the little tiny bud eye.
This bud eye is capable of growing another stem and therefore it is used for grafting.
The bud eye is cut off and it is placed under the bark of the rootstock of the other plant.
The bud eye will connect with and grow from this other plant but still contain the genetic material from its original plant thus growing the same type leaves and roses as the original plant.
The point where the bud eye unites with the rootstock is called the bud union.
This bud union develops into a knob and is the source for more stems (with the genetic material of the grafted bud eye).
In colder climates with harsh winters the bud union should be planted a couple of inches under the soil to protect it from the frost.
If the stems should get killed a seemingly weird phenomenon can occur where you will get sucker growth.
This is growth from the rootstock which is a different rose variety.
So you will mysteriously get different leaves and flowers then you did the year before.
Actually it's possible for sucker growth to occur anytime.
If this does happen it might have an interesting effect, a plant growing two varieties of roses, but they will need to be removed because they will eventually crowd out your desired variety.
Anyway in case you weren't aware of it this is the usual and customary method of rose planting as it produces healthier roses.
I found this interesting the first time I learned of it and wanted to share it with you for your own edification.
