Current research show that DHA, an essential omega-3 fatty acid found commonly in fish and marine food sources may help increase a developing baby's cognitive functioning, reduce the risk of pre-term labor and decrease the risk of postpartum depression.
A select summary of the current research is below:
  • A 2009 study published in the Journal of American Medical Association found that preterm infants receiving DHA-rich breast milk less likely to develop serious mental delay
  • A 2008 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a DHA deficient mother during pregnancy may result in children with low visual acuity.
  • A 2008 study published in the journal Pediatrics showed that DHA is vital for brain and eye development during the third trimester
Furthermore, most experts recommend 300 - 1000 mg of DHA with majority of them recommending somewhere in the 300 - 500mg of Dha for pregnant women in their 3rd trimester and continuing into breastfeeding period to ensure the infant gets adequate amount of DHA.
But getting DHA to meet these requirements from food sources can be problematic for pregnant women.
The FDA recommends eating up to 12 ounces (two average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are low in mercury, such as shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.
Unfortunately, the majority of pregnant women in the U.
S.
fail to get the recommended amount of DHA in their diets and DHA is not found in most prenatal vitamins.
According to American Pregnancy Association, an excellent way to meet your need for these essential fatty acids is in Prenatal DHA by Nordic Naturals during pregnancy and Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod liver oil during lactation.
"Knowing the high quality of the Nordic Naturals brand and the verification of efficacy through research, we welcome this omega leader to our organization for the purpose of expanding our nutritional education for the betterment of pregnant women and their families," quoting Brad Imler, Ph.
D.
, President of the American Pregnancy Association.
This is such a valuable endorsement that you have to look no further to making sure that you meet your daily needs of DHA knowing that you are getting safe and sufficient (450 mg per serving) amounts.
