Medically referred to as halitosis, bad breath is the term commonly used.
More often than not, it is a result of a problem that exists within the mouth, possibly related to foods stuck between the teeth or bacteria.
Below are four recommendations by dentists to stop bad breath in its tracks.
The first recommendation is to floss daily.
Although most of us will brush our teeth, flossing is not on everyone's list of hygienic practices.
Unfortunately, it is absolutely necessary because it will remove trapped particles of food and bacteria from between the teeth.
Although it may be tedious, it is always good practice to floss, and it can be done practically anywhere, from the shower to watching TV, reading, or anything else.
The important thing is that a person finds the time to do it on a daily basis.
A second recommendation is to use a tongue scraper.
Although they have not been on the market for a very long time, these devices have proven to be exceptional in removing any food particles, fungus, bacteria, and dead cells that are trapped in the grooves of the tongue.
All these are responsible for halitosis.
The bacteria is an anaerobic layer that thrives in an environment that is deprived of oxygen, such as at night when the mouth is closed for long periods of time.
The only way he can be removed is physically and if it stays behind, a strong odor is emitted.
An oral rinse is also important to use, especially those who have a more serious problem with bad breath.
An alcohol-free mouth rinse can kill over 99% of the bacteria in the mouth.
This product is often preferred by patients because it does not burn like mouthwashes that contain alcohol.
Of course, regular dental checkups and cleanings should be scheduled, meaning twice a year.
If there is a serious halitosis problem, then it is better to increase the dentist visits to several times a year.
Although halitosis may seem more like an inconvenience to some people, dentists see it as a connection to health issues.
For instance, the patient may be suffering from gum disease, which may be a direct result from heart disease.
It is not uncommon for dentists to be the first to detect health problems in their patients just from inspecting their teeth and gums.
Therefore, in order to correct bad breath, a patient should use at least one of the above recommendations, even though it would be best to use more, or all, for that matter.
Oral hygiene and overall general health are directly related, so it is imperative that patients make more of a commitment to caring for their mouths.
