How to Bend Metal Pipes
- 1). Mark the place on the pipe where the bend needs to be. Use a permanent marker to mark the spot, and a tape measure to determine whether the location is accurate.
- 2). Fill the inside of the pipe with sand. Duct tape one end of the pipe and then tightly pack the sand in the pipe. Duct tape the other end of the pipe to seal the sand in. The sand will prevent kinks on the pipe when you bend it.
- 3). Insert the metal pipe into a manual bender tool; they can be rented or bought at a hardware store. Position the metal pipe as indicated on the bender, usually sliding it until the middle of the pipe is on a marked place in the center of the tool.
- 4). Adjust the manual bender tool to suit the metal pipe you are bending. Most kinds of bender tools need to be adjusted according to the outside diameter of the pipe.
- 5). Bring the ends of the bender tool together by forcing them towards each other with both hands. Continue until the metal pipe is bent into the needed shape.
