Amanda had changed her life in the wrong way.
Drugs were a daily occurrence but of course she didn't think she was acting any different until one day while driving, her jumbled mind seemingly lost control of what is important while driving a car and she ended up crashing into a house, pinning a woman and a baby under her car in the process.
This is only the beginning of another excellent story by Andrew Gross.
Dr.
Henry Steadman had everything, or so he thought.
He had a very successful cosmetic practice in south Florida, a teenage daughter, Hallie, and while attending various conventions, he met and made personal contact with some good-looking women while still keeping a fairly decent relationship with his ex wife, Liz.
While searching for a hotel where he was the key speaker, he became disoriented and made some moves while driving his car that drew the attention of the law.
He was pulled over and what started out to be a small matter ballooned into a huge argument that then turned into a shooting right in front of the doctor.
He had been placed in cuffs in the back of a police cruiser as several other police cruisers arrived.
As the other cops departed the original cop finally talked decent to Dr.
Steadman, took off his cuffs, and told him to get back in his own car while he wrote up a warning.
Suddenly he heard a popping noise that turned out to be a shot that killed the original cop.
Dr.
Steadman took off not wanting any more questions or charges piled on him.
All this started a merry-go-round for the doctor.
Carrie Holmes was returning to work after losing her husband and almost losing her son four-months previous.
She worked for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office as their Community Outreach Director.
She was not officially a cop but she had to assist on cases in the community.
She was in the office when the report of a cop being killed was made known.
Meanwhile Dr.
Steadman was driving around trying to avoid the law but not knowing exactly where he was or where he should go.
He thought of a good friend, Mike, who was a lawyer in the area, so he tried to contact Mike without success, while still driving around trying to hide in plain view.
He knew he had to change cars.
He took a taxi to get him to Mike's apartment only to find Mike was dead.
Oh no! He took Mikes car for transportation.
He called Liz a few times trying to convince her that he didn't do any of the things that the police say he had done.
He was a wanted man for murder he did not commit.
He knew he should turn himself in.
He tried calling the police and Carrie answered the phone, unconvinced that he was innocent.
Dr.
Steadman's daughter, Hallie, had been kidnapped and he was told to have no contact with the police or Hallie would die.
Steadman was really in a pickle now wanted for murder, trying to get his daughter back, trying to get Carrie to help him, and also his ex-wife to believe him and help.
There are many sub-plots to the story, all of which keep you very much interested.
Carrie eventually doubts Steadman's guilt and agrees to help him.
Her bosses don't exactly agree.
She even brought her brother, Jack, an FBI agent into play to help Steadman.
I have probably given you too much of the story now but what I have written is nothing compared to all the action the author has given his readers.
It is a great story.
