About BAM's Opera House Theater
Fabled opera singer Enrico Caruso and legendary American president Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared here in 1940. In 1962, Russian ballet icon Rudolf Nureyev made his American debut here, before he defected. If the story of the Brooklyn Academy of Music's 150 year history were told as a symphony, it would be punctuated by historic highs, long slow periods of waiting, and fast-paced edgy exploration
Today the main building of BAM's three-venue campus (which includes the separate Harvey Theater and BAM Fisher as well)is called the Peter Jay Sharp Building. It houses:
- The grand Opera House theater, featuring two balconies and 2,200 seats.
- BamRose Cinemas: Several movie theaters with some original details.
- BamCafe: The hip bar and cafe area, formerly an ornate ballroom on the second floor. BAMcafe opened in 1997 as a multipurpose space housing BAMcafé.BAMcafé is open two hours before Opera House performances for pre-show dining (full-service dining & drinks), an don Friday and Saturday nights in season you can hear free live music at the cafe and bar. (no cover, no minimum)
