How to Take Off a Motocross Tire
- 1). Put the proper closed-end wrenches on either side of the central mounting bolt that attaches the wheel to the frame. Unscrew the nut counter-clockwise, pull out the bolt and remove the wheel, while a friend lowers the bike frame to the floor. For the rear wheel you will have to pull the chain off the sprocket as you take the wheel off.
- 2). Unscrew the air valve cap. Use your finger or a screwdriver to press the valve stem pin toward one side to let any remaining air out of the tube.
- 3). Lay the wheel flat on the floor. Loosen the bead, or edge, of the tire from the rim. Jam a Flathead screwdriver between the tire and the rim. Pry the outer lip of the tire over the edge of the rim. Leave the Flathead screwdriver in between the rim and tire to keep the tire pried out. Use the other Flathead screwdriver to continue to completely pry the tire over the rim, working side to side.
- 4). Stand the wheel up. With your hands and one Flathead screwdriver, pry the other side of the tire over the same side of the rim you already have half the tire pried off of. You will have to use some force, prying with the Flathead screwdriver and pushing with your hand, to initially get the tire started off the rim, but once you have a portion off it will come off easily from there.
- 5). Take the tire off the rim completely. Pull the flat tube out of the tire. Purchase a new tire and tube from your local motorcycle and dirt bike dealer. Reverse the procedure to reinstall.
