      The Toronto Police Service is always hiring new officers, although the number of applicants far outweighs the number of jobs available. In some cases, qualified candidates may wait a year or more to be invited for an interview. Whatever your background and educational experience, candidates for police officer positions must undergo the same application process. Applicants must submit all completed application forms and supporting documentation in person to the Toronto Police Service Employment Unit.

    Requirements

    • Requirements to become a Toronto police officer include being a Canadian citizen 18 years or older with permanent residency status. Grade 12 education is required, and a post-secondary degree will increase your chances of getting the job. A minimum vision acuity of 20/40 (uncorrected) is required, and hearing ability must meet the hearing standards established by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. An Ontario Class G license with less than six demerit points and CPR and first aid certification are also required.

    Pre-interview Assessments

    • Candidates must pass a written communication test (WCT), a Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP), a Police Analytical Thinking Inventory (PATI) test, a Behavioral Personal Assessment Device (BPAD) test and a vision and hearing test. The candidate also must undergo an interview process. Upon the successful completion of these tests, candidates receive an Ontario Chiefs of Police Certificate, which they can use to apply for a position with the Toronto Police Force.

    Interviews

    • Candidates must attend and perform well in interviews. Interviews are designed to assess your skills, ability to learn, and potential fit with the needs of the police service. A background questionnaire must be completed at this time as well.

    Post Interview Assessments

    • Candidates must pass a background check and undergo a psychological assessment. If an employment offer is made by the Toronto Police Service, the candidate must complete a comprehensive medical questionnaire and pass a physical examination. Cardiac diseases and disorders, peripheral and cerebral vascular disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and an addiction to drugs and alcohol are some of the medical conditions that may disqualify a candidate for employment with the Toronto Police Service.
