US Passport Renewal in Minneapolis

101 4
Residents of the "City of Lakes" have several different options for replacing an expired or soon-to-be-expired passport. To find the method that's right for you, you must consider your individual circumstances, including how much time you have and how much money you're willing to spend.

US Passport Renewal by Mail

You should be eligible to renew your passport by mail as long as all of the following are true:

  • You know where your current passport is; it hasn't been lost or stolen

  • Your current passport is in good condition and hasn't been damaged

  • Your current passport was issued less than 15 years ago and after your 16th birthday.

  • Your current passport was issued in the name you are currently using or you have legal documentation to support any name change requests.

To apply by mail, simply submit renewal application form DS-82 to the address listed on the form, along with the appropriate fees, one passport photo, your current passport and the required legal documents if you have a name change request. Processing time will be about 6 weeks if you just go with regular processing. Expedited processing is available for an additional $60, and will cut processing time down to about 3 weeks.

Renewing your Passport in Person

If you don't meet the qualifications listed above, you'll need to renew your passport in person at one of the three Minneapolis post offices that serve as passport acceptance facilities or at the Hennepin County Government Services Center.

If your current passport has not been lost, damaged or mutilated, bring it when you apply to serve as proof of identification and proof of citizenship. If you can't use your current passport due to the reasons mentioned above, you'll need to bring your driver's license or other state-issued ID and a certified copy of your birth certificate. Also, call ahead to confirm fees and payment methods. Processing time will be the same as if you renewed by mail.

Visiting a Passport Agency Office

If you're in a hurry and you need your passport for travel in less than 2 weeks, you can make an appointment at the Minneapolis Passport Agency office. This office only does emergency passports, and you'll need to bring a copy of your itinerary along with the required documents issued above. You will still need to pay the $60 expedite fee, but you should be able to get your US passport renewal in 24 hours or less. To make an appointment, call 1-877-487-2778.
