    • 1). Fill the gas tank with fresh gasoline if it has trouble starting. Stale gas can prevent the engine from starting.

    • 2). Twist open the oil cap and inspect the dipstick connected to the cap. Add oil if the oil level is below the "Empty" line.

    • 3). Pull out on the air filter tabs to remove the air filter cover. Inspect the air filter. Replace the filter if it is stained from oil, gas or dirt. A dirty filter prevents air from getting to the engine.

    • 4). Press the spark plug wire fully onto the spark plug. If the wire starts to come loose, the engine will not start.

    • 5). Remove any clumps of grass in the side discharge chamber if the engine stalls during mowing. A blocked discharge can prevent the blades from turning easily.
