    Math

    • Use St. Patrick's Day to teach elementary students about charts and graphs. Prepare a list of "green items" such as students with green eyes, likes green jello, has a green pencil or favorite color is green. Ask students these questions and have them write the total number by the statements. Model for the students how to create a bar graph, line graph and pie chart based on the information. Pass out a small bag of Lucky Charms cereal and ask the students to create one of the charts or graphs based on the number of charms they count in the bag of cereal. Use the Lucky Charms cereal to practice counting with younger children and identifying different charms and colors.

    Language Arts

    • Incorporate St. Patrick's Day into language arts lesson plans. Use St. Patrick's Day themed words such as shamrock, leprechaun and Ireland for student's spelling words. Play a spelling game. Write spelling words on the back of a shamrock. Ask students to draw a shamrock out of the leprechaun's hat. They must give the correct part of speech such as noun or verb and spell correctly. Modify this game to include sentences, encouraging students to practice forming complete sentences. For younger students, place pictures of objects on the shamrock and ask what letter is at the beginning of the word. Have students practice writing the letter both upper and lower case.

    History

    • Provide students with the history of St. Patrick's Day. Bring a map and show them where Ireland is located compared with where their town is located. Check out books from the library with pictures of the Irish countryside, showing the green vegetation. Talk about and show students some of the traditions of St. Patrick's Day such as the shamrock, the color green and leprechauns. Teach students an Irish jig for St. Patrick's Day and play traditional bagpipe music for them.
